Braces

Braces are brackets and wires that move teeth into place, for teens and adults whose bite or crowding calls for them.

The orthodontist decides at the exam whether braces fit your bite, and explains the options before anything is placed. Colored bands are your choice at each visit.

What happens, in order

  1. 01

    Step 1: Exam and records

Photos, a scan of your teeth, and X-rays only if they are needed. The orthodontist looks at your bite and your growth.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The plan

You hear the options, a range for how many months, and what happens if you wait. The written estimate comes at this visit.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Placing the braces

Brackets go on the teeth and a wire is fitted. Plan on one longer visit; you can go back to school or practice afterward.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Adjustment visits

Usually every several weeks. The wire or bands are changed, and you can pick new colors.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Braces off

The braces come off and you are fitted for retainers the same day.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

Teeth and gums can be sore for a few days after the braces go on and after some adjustments. Soft foods help. Ask us what to take for soreness that is right for you.

  • Choices

Metal or clear brackets, and bands in the colors you pick. The orthodontist tells you which brackets suit your plan.

  • If you wait

Some problems depend on timing and some don't. The orthodontist tells you which applies to you, and what waiting means.

  • Risks and after-care

Brackets can come loose and wires can poke. Plaque that stays on the teeth around braces can leave white marks or cavities, so you brush after eating. Teeth need retainers afterward to stay where they ended up.

  • How it's billed

Braces are one treatment fee, written down before you start. Read how fees work for insurance, receipts and payments.

  • Who provides it

Dr. Blia Xiong and Dr. Lilian Zepeda, orthodontists, provide your care.

Questions about braces

What can't I eat with braces?

Hard and sticky foods can break brackets: caramel, popcorn kernels, ice, hard candy. Cut apples and carrots into pieces. We give you a list at the visit.

Do braces hurt?

Soreness is common for a few days after the braces go on and after some adjustments. Tell us if it lasts, and we'll tell you what to do.

What if a wire pokes me or a bracket comes loose?

Call us during office hours. Orthodontic wax over the spot helps until your visit. If your face swells or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911.

Can I play my sport in braces?

Ask us at the visit. A mouthguard made for braces is the usual answer, and we show you which kind. After a hit to the mouth that loosens a tooth, call us or go to an emergency room.

How often are the visits?

Usually every several weeks. Eric books them before and after school, and moves one around a game when he can.

Ask about braces

Send a request and Alyssa will call, text or email you back with a time. A parent or guardian can ask for anyone under 18.
